THE HUMANOID AGE

Then & Now

From a human space to a working workflow.

ASIMO’s original design goals and Digit’s warehouse application offer two ways to examine what makes a robot useful.

A machine that reaches a useful object has crossed one threshold. A machine that contributes to a repeatable workflow faces additional requirements. The difference gives us a way to connect historical ambitions with present applications.

Then, fit the human environment

ASIMO’s 2000 announcement explained its size in relation to switches, doorknobs, tables, and benches. The environment helped define the body. Honda’s launch record ↗

Now, describe the handoff

GXO’s 2024 account described Digit transferring totes from other robots onto conveyors. This identifies a specific handoff inside an operation. GXO’s deployment record ↗

Design question

Can it reach?

Body size, joint motion, posture, and the location of the object shape the task.

Operational question

Can the work continue?

Timing, intervention, recovery, and the next machine in the process shape the result.

A connection worth following

This is an editorial comparison of questions. It does not establish a direct engineering lineage between the platforms. It suggests what a reader can follow as a laboratory behavior becomes a proposed service or industrial application.

Read a deployment with the same attention you would give a prototype. Specify the task, identify the source, and ask which parts of the working day the evidence covers. The warehouse evidence file follows those questions over time.
