Movement as a research problem
Legged movement asks a machine to manage its posture while making and breaking contact with the ground. A historical account can follow that question through experimental systems, research groups, and later applications.
The most useful history goes beyond a compilation of spectacular clips. It examines the conditions of each experiment, the technical question being tested, and the collaborators involved.

Our Atlas profile distinguishes robot generations and points to Boston Dynamics’ own sources. The Then & Now walking feature offers questions for comparing movement demonstrations.
This opening portrait draws on the biography cited above. Technical lineage between particular experiments and products requires its own documentation.
